Academic Discussion on Indonesia’s Role amid the Decline of Multilateralism

The Department of International Relations, Universitas Pembangunan Nasional “Veteran” Yogyakarta, recently organized an academic discussion focusing on Indonesia’s role in international organizations and regimes amid the ongoing decline of multilateralism. Held on 5 February 2026, the activity formed part of the implementation of academic collaboration with the International Relations Study Program, University of Riau.

The discussion brought together lecturers and students from both institutions and featured speakers Dr. Yusnida Eka Nizmi and Dr. Yessi Olivia from the International Relations Study Program, University of Riau, along with Helga Yohana Simatupang from the Department of International Relations, UPN “Veteran” Yogyakarta. Through their presentations, the speakers examined contemporary challenges to multilateralism and reflected on how Indonesia can continue to play a constructive and strategic role within international organizations and global governance frameworks.

Beyond serving as an academic forum, the discussion strengthened inter-university engagement and contributed to the enrichment of students’ perspectives on current global issues. The activity also reaffirmed the commitment of the Department of International Relations UPN “Veteran” Yogyakarta to fostering academic collaboration and supporting the development of International Relations studies in Indonesia.
